In the second year, the group wanted to move from places to people. The participants chose who to interview — often people they already knew, sometimes strangers met at the street market — wrote their own interview guides, and went to find them at work, at home, or interviewed them at the museum, because the museum is a place where people connect.

Each recorded interview has a photographic portrait made in the same place. It is those pairs — a voice, a face, a location — that make up the exhibition.

What emerges is not a typical portrait. It is a multicultural municipality, populated by people from Mexico City and from all over the country, sharing one condition: a dormitory town you leave for an hour and a half to two hours every morning, and come back to in order to hold together a neighbourhood nobody else holds.

“This exhibition is the result of a series of interviews and photographs with specific people in Valle de Chalco who represent a part of the territory. We chose some of them because their individual stories interested us; we wrote the interview guides from what we already knew about them. We went to see them at their workplaces, at their homes, or we interviewed them at the museum, because it is a place that connects people.

We also decided to venture out into the territory and interview strangers who come to the street market. One thing struck us: people are far more aware of the museum’s existence than we, its collaborators, assumed. Those we interviewed know it is there, know its difficulties and know what is at stake for culture here.”

the street as museum

The portraits were printed large and pasted across the municipality: on a tagged wall of the commercial street, on the shutter of a bazaar, on the concrete of the skatepark, on the front of a community development centre, inside a mechanic’s workshop. The scale is not decorative: at human height, a neighbour’s face becomes a public sign.
